Where can I find Hawaii's Preschool Content Standards?
Preschool Content Standards can be found, either at http://www.goodbeginnings.org/index.php/site/contentAndHIPreschoolStandards/, or by calling Good Beginnings Alliance at (808) 531-5502.
Is this assessment required by No Child Left Behind?
No Child Left Behind does not mandate (or encourage) the testing of young children, although we know that school readiness is a critical factor in school success. In fact, NCLB has no direct accountability requirements that apply to classrooms or programs that serve children in 2nd grade and below.
Why is it necessary to also assess whether the schools are ready for entering children?
Hawaii's 2001 State Legislature enacted a formal definition of school readiness that states "young children are ready to have successful learning experiences in school when there is a positive interaction among the child's developmental characteristics, school practices and family and community support". The policies and procedures elementary schools put in place play a key role in supporting a child's readiness.
How will this information be used?
Data from this assessment will be available at both the school level and aggregated at the state level. The data is available on the following website: http://arch.k12.hi.us and click on HSSRA. This valuable information will be used to inform policymakers, assist schools in program planning, help communities target interventions, and provide feedback on the state's efforts to improve early childhood care and education.
